Are you a finance cheat?
by Sian Meades on Jan 24,2012
I’ve realised that I cheat when it comes to money.
Cheaty cheat cheat.
I convince myself that I’m spending less, with sneaky little tricks that I’ve honed over the years.
Here’s a little list of ways I cheat my brain into thinking it’s spending less:
I ignore the pennies
I went out with friends at the weekend and had the inevitable ‘how much money did I spend’ panic the next day. A quick rifle through my bag for some bar receipts showed it was quite a lot. But I round down, (‘oh, £15.78 and £7.64, so £15 there, plus £5 is £20′). And I forget that I had some change in my bag and spent that as well. I think I’ve spent £20 when I’ve actually spent around £35.
How to fix this cheat: Add everything up properly, or take cash out. Or, go somewhere where cocktails are a fiver. You won’t spend less, but your maths will be accurate.
I don’t count credit card charges
£1 to use your card? Yes, of course that’s fine. I’m tipsy and want some cigarettes. I ignore the extra add ons all the time. Even the Ryanair ones. They don’t count, in my head they’re not part of the cost of my flight.
How to fix this cheat: STOP KIDDING YOURSELF. Or stop flying Ryanair, whichever works for you.
I don’t count presents as spending
I’m not spending money on me so it doesn’t matter. It’s nice money. It’s kind money. No one can begrudge your friends and family nice presents…
How to fix this cheat: People like really well chosen cards, too. Maybe even more so than presents.
Ditto birthday drinks and dinner with friends. That squid starter is ME BEING A FRIEND.
How to fix this cheat: Oh, I like squid. But you can share starters or only order one if you’re very hungry.
I spend money the night before payday
I’ve practically been paid! Let’s go to the cinema!
How to fix this cheat: Rent a film and make your own popcorn. You haven’t been paid yet.
All of these little extras are my cheating. Convincing myself that I’m not spending any money. The little add-ons just don’t register yet they’re the ‘oh, that’s why I have less than I thought in my bank account’ amounts. I’m aiming to stop that before I have to have a ‘yes my money went on cinema sweets and salt and pepper squid’ conversation with someone at my bank.
