eBay frenzy as undated 20p sells for £8k

It’s time to start emptying pockets, raiding piggybanks and rummaging down the back of the sofa – because you could be sitting (literally) on a 20p worth thousands.

On Monday, TotallyMoney.com reported on an exceptionally unusual mistake that had occurred at the Royal Mint, allowing thousands of 20 pence pieces to enter circulation without a date on either side – a mistake that hadn’t occurred in over 300 years. The news came to light when collectable coin firm, the London Mint Office, offered £50 for any finders who chose to send the coin on to them.

But since then, a bidding war has erupted on auction site eBay, with some collectors willing to pay thousands of pounds to get their hands of the rare ‘mule’ coins.

Now, one lucky finder as ‘7588oliver’ has just bagged himself £8,000. The coin was listed with a starting price of £4,000 at 8pm on Monday evening. By 2pm the following day, an unidentified bidder stepped in to scoop the coin for the ‘Buy it Now’ price of £8,000.

Another seller in Blyth, Northumberland scooped £5,800 on Monday after the story of the mix up hit the headlines. Listed since Friday 19th June with a starting price of 99p, the coin had received only three bids before Monday 29th, bringing the price up to less than £20. But as the news of the Royal Mint blunder spread, a bidding frenzy on the final day of the auction saw 22 more bidders place over 70 bids to bring the auction to a close at £5,800.

Since the successful sale prices have started to rise, one seller in Carlisle has listed his coin for a ‘Buy it Now’ price of £1,200,000 and pledged to donate 70% of the final sale price to charity. Prospective buyers are also invited to make an offer if they would prefer to spend a little less than 6,000,000 times the coin’s official monetary value. Meanwhile, a seller in Northwich is asking for £920,995 while another in Benfleet wants a mere £350,000.

However, coin collectors looking to get their hands on the rare coins should look out for scams that offer coins with ‘no date on the queen’s side’. Unlike the undated coin pictured, coins with the date on only one side are perfectly normal and consequently worth precisely 20 pence.

How much would you be willing to pay for an undated 20p? Have your say.

Rub a suspect coin against another, very easy to detect if fake or not as the fake will dent and rub off the gold colouring.

I found one of these coins down the back of my sofa, I am currently keeping it as I am a vintage coin collector in the boroughs of transelvania. My coin collection came to an abrupt end when I found a 20p coin worth £50. They call me mysterious_girl25, for a few reasons. One being I have collected 25 of these undated 20p’s. Big shout out to my possé and my homeboys of my hometown.

I have a 20 pence coin with no date on either side, with the addition of the mysterious numbers “19″ and “83″ printed either side of the crown on its “tails” side. This leads me to suspect that this is a limited edition number 19 of 83 minted coins, possibly worth around £100,000.

No hang on I see it now. I think 1983 might have been when it was minted. Fiddlesticks.

    Offers around 20p considered.

There are around 200,000 undated 20p coins. Any genuine collector need only wait 3 months for the frenzy to die down. If they haven’t found one in change they can buy one for £25 tops I reckon. My local coin dealer refuses to buy them as they are not rarities, despite fools on E Bay. You have been warned!!!

I am about to buy one of these coins as an investment. Once the frenzy dies down and less are in general circulation, the price has to rise for collectors.
I plan on going halves with my sister at £75 each. I am confident that we will make money further down the line and if not we should at least get our money back. They have been selling at £5k + lately, so there are some serious buyers around and Ebay is a global market place, got to be worth a punt !!

There are 50k – 200k of these undated coins in circulation. 98% of them have already been returned to The Royal Mint for a melt down, via banks and post offices. This means that there are still 4,000 out there, most of them are probably in the hands of coin collectors. Currently, there are well over 3,000 ebay listings but the average prices of these coins have fallen from around £300 – £500 to around £120 – £160. I have 2 of these undated coins. I keep one just in case it worths thousands in the future and I am selling the other one on ebay for £49,995. Any offers please.

they are not rarities, and you have been warned by many others too!

    Hello,

I have found one of these on the floor at home.

My 20p coin is undated both sides and have looked many times to be sure. I think when I picked it up my subconscious remembered the article on the subject of undated 20ps.

I am undecided as to what to do with it, have considered putting onto ebay to see what can be got for it as the money could come in handy or hold out for it’s rarity to increase. I would also consider swapping it for a decent economical car if someone is willing to trade.

This topic has got me curious to the point of even starting a blog on the subject which is a little scruffy but I will tidy it up in time- http://20p-undated.blogspot.com/

Any decent offers considered for a genuine item like said undated both sides at dbwales08@gmail.com

I think the initial interest in these has waned a bit now.
They seem to only be going for about £60 – £70 on Ebay now which is still a huge profit on 20p but my advice is to hold on to it for a while. I will be holding on to mine. I think it was just a myth that people were paying thousands for them.

Apparently, the actual number of ‘mule’ coins released is nearer 1% of the original estimate. If this is true, then it would appear that approximately 2000 were released into circulation, as opposed to the original estimate of 200,000. This will mean a substantial rise in the value of genuine coins.

Victoria, my best advise is to hang on to it for a while! It looks very likely that there are a lot fewer GENUINE coins in circulation than first thought. Some of the coins being sold on eBay are ‘scam’ coins, either ‘un-dated one side only’ or the coins don’t turn up after the listing has ended. When all these ‘scammers’ have gone, I believe these coins will increase in value very significantly. Just hang on for a while longer!

    Paul.

The Royal Mint has always been unable or unwilling to clarify exactly how many coins were affected. Their web site states, as it always has done, that an unspecified number of “less than 250,000″ were struck. Obviously at the time of making our offer, some of our financial people were a little concerned about the possibility of paying £50 for each of these. Certain coin dealers were even suggesting that the imagined plentiful supply would lead to market prices dropping to £10 by the start of 2010.

Nick Hart, one of our coin experts, was right all along. He claimed that the number of undated 20p’s out there was much lower than the 250,000 level. His predictions that our offer would only receive a few hundred redemptions, despite the enormous publicity that the story garnered, proved to be completely correct. Clearly this story has some way to run and the value of these coins is only going to increase. Maybe we should do something about that? Watch this space for further details.

  • Stephen Silverstein wrote on 20 August, 2010, 20:15

As a general rule, these coins are worth about £50 and I can guarantee that they will not appreciate over the years. It beggars belief that anyonr should pay much more than this – there are plenty on eBay. There are 120,000 1951 pennies and you’d be lucky to get £50 for one of those. I also notice one respondent claiming that the Royal Mint has recalled the coins but that is complete rubbish because the Royal Mint has declared these coins to be legal tender. The £50 from the London Mint is not what it is claimed. They invited 25,000 to register for their offer and IF one of those registering found one of these mules, they would be paid £50 for them so it’s no surprise that very few claimed their £50 but the London Mint added 25,000 to their mailing list for very little cost! The coins being offered on eBay as mules are generally the real thing, despite one respondent’s comment.

I have one of these coins in mint (no pun intended) condition.
    It isn’t a fake.

  • CaptainSpineSoup wrote on 3 January, 2012, 15:05

I have one of these coins but the london mint can get stuffed, i trust them as far as i could throw them, As for saying ‘I’d pay 20p for it’, that is the single most predictable and boring thing anyone has said, ever, in the entire history of the multiverse. Just sayin’.
