Ed: The pics show that the boat has a shallow draft – why is this? Less water resistance? What sort of keel does the boat have? Also, you write about ballast. Please can you explain how large the tanks are – and why and when you need them?
Answer: The boat has a very shallow draft on hull correct. This is because it is a planing boat. Also the less draft there is the less water resistance there is. The boat has an almost 4m long keel with a small bulb at the bottom. This small bulb keeps the boat upright! There are 6 ballast tanks in the boat, which you fill at different times. On either side there is one forward, one centre and one aft. Each tank will hold approx a tonne of water, with the aft tanks being the largest. You fill these to balance out the boat and this means you can get the boat really powered up. For example in strong downwind conditions you would fill the aft tank meaning the bow rises higher out of the water to create less drag and prevent the boat pitch-poling into a large wave. Beckie: What is a gybe? And what are squalls??
Answer: A gybe is when you are sailing downwind and you alter the boat direction by a large amount, meaning that the wind now comes from the other side of the boat opposite to where you were before. Gybes are only done in up to 26knots of wind. Any higher and I would tack the boat round to prevent possible damage during the gybe.
A tack is the same as a gybe, except sailing upwind.
Squalls are small rainclouds packed with rain and wind. These are very common in tropical climates and the wind speed can rise to 40knots. You have to be careful of these as if caught with a large sailset the boat can go out of control.
Rod: Can you put a Monitor Windvane on the boat? So you don’t have to rely on a microprocessor.
Answer: As great as it would be to steer from a windvane it simply wouldn’t work on Totallymoney.com. This calibre of boat requires computers to keep them on course and stable because of the high speeds it can reach. Totallymoney.com will easily sustain speeds over 17knots and a windvane simply wouldn’t be able to cope.

It still remains a mystery…we have looked at and analysed exactly when it cuts out, what equipment is running at the time, the sea state, the wind speed, the draw on the batteries etc. We still can’t find the problem. Yes, many extra bits of kit have been added to the boat, so this could be one of the causes but we aren’t sure. In Gran Canaria at least one NKE specialist will look over the boat top to bottom and we are flying out parts from France which may be the problem. If we have to replace anything we will.

Good to see your spirits are high in spite of the auto-helm problem, sounds like the boat is going well. As you point out, there’s no room for error with a faulty auto-helm when you are charging on in a blow, more so if it’s changeable.
Right now we’ve had three days of freezing temperatures, so I’m very envious of you catching the rays and showering on the open deck. I spent part of yesterday prepping my own yacht for painting once the weather improves. Drank several cups of tea to keep me warm.
Have you crossed the line before, or will King Neptune be paying a visit to perform a “crossing the line ceremony”?

After reading a load about APs and windvanes you answered that did you have the man overboard on. In the instructions you can cancel the alarm but it does not fix the problem.In all the systems including yours it gives specific reasons why the alarm should sound and if this is outside them there is a fault. Glad you arrived in GC safely; hopefully you can get the AP sorted out once and for all and finally get on with what you came for! It must be very frustrating for you at the moment; it is good to see you keeping positive as this is the only way. When the times get hard, just think you could be at home in the cold having to go to college, I am sure a smile will return to the face then!

Well what can we say, its cold here and GA and the coaches have us working our backsides off, its the big comp on Wednesday, first as “freshers” so we all keen to impress. We will keep you updated with results, GA just wants to get revenge on a couple of Universities from last year so we are having to put up with the constant stories of how it wont be able to live it down if we dont finish ahead of them in medals table. Hey Mike…I was wondering how you avoid ships at night…does your Radar (assuming you have one) provide some sort of audible warning at a certain range…things are obviously very dark in the middle of the Atlantic in the wee hours.
BTW…the Queen Mary is making westbound passage to New York from Southampton departing Aug 17 arriving NY 23 Aug., then eastbound to Southampton departing 23 Aug arriving Southampton 29 Aug. Sure would be nice if you two famous British vessels could hookup for a photo op somewhere along the way. The QM2 might not be quite as fast as you are but I’m sure you could ’slow up’ enough to give her a chance…lol.
