Dear Everybody
This will be my last blog on this site as I am undertaking a new adventure next April.
I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has placed comments on this site. They really helped keep me going.

LONDON: Australian adventurer and solo round the world sailor, Don McIntyre announced today that Mike Perham, the world's youngest solo circumnavigator, has signed up as Second-in-command for the 2010 Bounty Boat Expedition. This is a 4,000-mile re-enactment 221 years after Capt William Bligh and his supporting crew were forced into an open-boat by the mutineering crew on HMS Bounty and successfully sailed from Tonga to Timor in the Pacific.
McIntyre and Perham will face the same deprivations, with little food, no charts or toilet paper and only the limited navigation implements that were available to Bligh.
The search is now on for two extra crew to join this expedition, which has a serious scientific purpose, as well as raise money for MND research. This opportunity of a lifetime to re-create history will cost each individual £10,000 to participate. Only those with an extreme sense of adventure need apply.
The Route
McIntyre and Perham: will follow in the footsteps of Capt. William Bligh when cast adrift from HMS Bounty in the Pacific on April 28, 1789. This McIntyre and his 3-man crew will board their 25ft ‘Bounty Boat’ in the same position exactly 221 years to the day of the Bounty Mutiny and follow in the footsteps of Bligh. They will first sail to Tonga to find extra food and water, before heading westwards across the top of Fiji and the Vanuatu Island groups, bound for the Queensland Coast, Australia to land, like Bligh, on Restoration Island. They will then sail north inside the Great Barrier Reef to Thursday Island, and then through the Torres Strait to Kupang and Timor.
If successful, this will be the first time that anyone has sailed the same course in the same way that Bligh did. Previous attempts in 1983 and 1990 both used almanacs and charts for navigation, torches, modern timepieces, and also made unscheduled stopovers, did not follow the same route or were escorted part of the way. McIntyre and Perham will have no charts, no almanacs, modern timepieces or navigation equipment, torches, or toilet paper.
A GPS tracking system: locked away from the crew, will track McIntyre and Perham’s every 2 hours for the outside world to follow. The only other concession to the 21st Century will be a liferaft and other essential safety equipment, together with a satellite computer link for the 4-man crew to send daily blogs, photos and audio clips to tell their story and for psychologists and oceanographic scientists to monitor their progress and findings.

It would have been great to meet you, Don and fellow bloggers, particularly in Southampton as I used to live there many years ago. Unfortunately I can’t make it, so disappointed again; hopefully I will manage to meet you one day – perhaps at a book signing or another boat show.

Mike…thanks for this update and fairwell to the “SailMike” site. I had intended to print off all of the blogs from your solo voyage before the site was shut down. I’m big into nostalgia..lol. All but the latest 1/2 dozen have been removed and I can’t find any archival section for the ‘text’ blogs and comments. Photo gallery and video archives are still available, but no comments/blogs…Is this portion still available somewhere? I and many others would certainly love to have those comments recorded for posterity. Guess I should have got onto hitting the ‘print’ button sooner. Would there be any chance that these might be available on a CD in the near future?

Are you nuts? Why would anyone want to put themselves through such a test? On open boat? No toilet paper? Oh my god, you are crazy. Just so you know…my boat, a Benford 30 is a single mast, Chinese lug rig, very similar to the bounty boat. The old lug design really works well, and is very easy to handle. It will be a piece of cake for you, after the complicated totallymoney.com rig you had to deal with. I still think you’re crazy, but I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully you’ll find a way to blog this new adventure, no toilet paper is bad, but no computer would be a disaster.

I used to do this but it hasn’t worked for me for a few days now so hope Dan isn’t having same problem after your good advice. Only the last three are showing for me and the headings have jumped across to the right and overwriting the blog. This blip has happened before, some people commented about it on previous occasions. (Anyone else affected at the moment?)
The reason I wanted to search back through previous blogs was to find the one where Mike told us that he had agreed to join Don McIntyre on this Bounty trip. It was sometime during his Pacific crossing, maybe you missed that one.

To Mike: belated, but still whole-hearted, congratulations on your safe return home, and your achievement of the record you dreamed of. You are an extraordinary person, and you’ve done some extraordinary things. You hoped for donations to your charities to hit a pound a mile: I’ve assumed a total distance sailed of 30,000 miles and contributed accordingly. I’ve also given the same amount to the RNLI, a charity I feel should be close to the heart of anyone at sea in British waters.
To the Perham family, and the rest of the team: many, many thanks for all your support and assistance to Mike, whether through the last 17 years, or the last 10 months. He could not have done it without you, and then we would all have been the poorer.

Just to say thanks for your last blog on this site and am looking forward to the ‘builders’ finishing their work so that the ‘decorators’ can move in on the challengemike.com site!
All good things come to an end but at least the memories will live on. This site has been ‘home’ for the past nine months plus. To all the regular followers perhaps we will meet again either on Mike’s, bountyboat, Watson, Sunderland or Langley (Ryan) sites. Hope to meet some of you on Saturday 19th at S. Boat Show (1p.m.)

@dan and others regarding archives- I just discovered that there seems to be a problem with at least Internet Explorer 7 in getting to the archives. (No surprise, IE is the worst when it comes to following standards for websites.) However, in FireFox and Opera the method Carol mentioned works. Even the home page renders properly in those two.
In FireFox or Opera, click on BLOG in the navigation row and blogs will show AND at the end there is a list of Archives by month. I have them all now. I wish I had a way to contact you Dan because I could help you. Perhaps Peter will pass my email addy on to you.
Since the sailmike site has had a problem with the home page in IE for several days now, I had planned to email Peter to let him know (as I had done one other time recently) but then Mike said he was finished posting so I did not follow thru.
I agree with Carol that with the big buildup for the Sep 8 announcement, it was a HUGE let down NOT to find a quick and major post on this site. I had checked all day long looking for the big anouncement and was soooo disappointed. I knew what it was due to a post in Zacs blog that got me doing research late on Sep & here in the US. The ball was TOTALY dropped on this but it is over and life is good.
I have gone to the challengeMike.com site and even ordered a shirt tho no shipping charges were set up so not sure I will get it here in the US or not. He is one fantastic young man.

Thanks for the insight Jim. I am using IE7. It is odd though, that the site worked fine til about a wk ago. I use IE7 because it is the only one that my online banking will accept.

Thanks Jim for the heads up on IE7. I never considered it to be the issue for rendering, as it had worked fine up until a couple of weeks ago. I was using IE7 until today at which time I have switched to Firefox for viewing this site. Now, clicking on the “Blog” at top left of page opens all of the past few items and ALSO gives me the complete archives for the entire journey. Thanks very much for pointing this out. I’ll get busy now and copy these.
