Mike Perham world challenge
Sail Mike

1 day from the record! – 150 miles to go - 26 08 09

Mike Perham prepares to rewrite the record books

Dateline: Wednesday 26th August 2009 - Day 158
Position: 12:15 UTC 48° 51N, 09° 28W  150 miles WSW of Lizard Point
Speed: 13.1kts
Distance to Ushant/Falmouth finish line: 150 miles

17 year-old British sailor Mike Perham is now within a day of becoming the youngest person to sail single-handed around the world. He now expects his 50ft yacht Totallymoney.com  to reach the Lizard line marking the start and finish point of his 30,000 mile record-setting odyssey between 08:30 and 09:30 local Thursday morning - two months inside the current record.

Overnight, the teenager from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire has had to cope with the tail-end effects of Hurricane Bill which has now split into two distinct low pressure systems. The huge seas now running in the Western Approaches forced Mike to stay away from the Continental Shelf overnight but this is not expected to delay his arrival off Falmouth by very much

Bubbling with excitement, Mike reported this morning: I am getting really, really excited about crossing the finish line off the Lizard, tomorrow morning and also for my homecoming at Gunwharf Quay Portsmouth at 11:00 on Saturday. I've been doing tones of interviews over the satellite phone, all made possible by Clearpoint Weather's sponsorship. We use Clearpoint all the time for our weather routing, which saw me through this last hurricane safely so many thanks guys!

Tonight is going to be my last chance to get some goodish sleep, since I'm sure I won't get a minute’s peace tomorrow, what with all the shipping running up and down the English Channel. So although it's still blowing a really good gale outside, I need to make most of tonight to get in some good zzzz…

  1. It's really strange how you can be so proud of someone you have never met or talked to.
