Hello Everyone
I am now so close to the edge of my seat, I don’t know why I haven’t fallen off! It seems that the less miles Mike has to do, the more things I think of that can go wrong. Just when I was telling friends this leg has been relatively free of drama Mike phoned me yesterday to say he had to go up the mast.
The Google adverts are really helping and for your interest your clicking has now raised over £600. Many thanks……………please continue………

One of Mike’s key objectives of the voyage was to try to raise money for the Tall Ships Youth Trust and Save The Children. We thought if he raised a pound a mile that would be amazing but possible especially when you compare Mike’s endurance, compared to other fund raising initiatives. I have to say, Mike and I are a little dissapointed that he has only raised a few hundred pounds for each charity so far. Perhaps people are waiting to see if he finishes or perhaps people don’t no how to give? Perhaps our expectations are too big? What ever the reasons if you are able to give a small amount to one of Mike’s charities I know the money will be used for activities that Mike holds very close to his heart and it will make this voyage even more worthwhile than it already is.
We are watching the weather and hopefully Mike will be able to sail up the Solent on Saturday morning to reach Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth at 11am.

“Edge of your seat”, eh?
When I open up the web page each morning to get Mike’s latest blog, and read that he’s been up the mast whilst cracking on at a pretty healthy rate of knots, I already know that he’s back down and safe. Even so, I still get an adrenaline rush imagining his dangling on a rope 60ft above the ocean – and a some butterflies in the tummy when that image is reinforced by the photos.
You, on the other hand, get a phone call from your young son to say that he’s about to embark on this excursion and then have to wait an hour or so to hear the phone ring again. So, when I read of such activates, I find myself not only thinking about Mike tackling this daunting task, but I also find myself thinking about yourself, and others back home, during that time.
Now, he’s proven to you, probably more than any of us internet followers, that he’s one very capable and sensible individual, and his description of yesterday’s analysis of the rigging hiccup and the highly detailed way that he worked out how to temporarily redistribute all the tensions and stresses in the rigging of a very high-tech modern sailing boat, demonstrates his incredible knowledge and understanding of the physics involved. (Find me another 17 year old that can do that! Hard enough to find someone of any age, I reckon.)
So, a couple of simple questions – if I may – the answer to which may be less simple!
As his father, what on earth is that one hour of waiting for the second phone call like?
Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night in a state of total panic?
I, and others, have mentioned in posts the level of our admiration for Mike. I must say that my admiration extends to the whole Perham family. I reckon “Edge of your seat” may be somewhat of an understatement.

Hi Mike and Mike’s Dad,
I have just returned from a trip to Birmingham – judging the quilt show at Festival of Quilts and doing a little sightseeing as well. I love Inspector Morse and so I had another little jaunt around Oxford – even had a half pint of lager in the Turf Tavern – usually it’s too busy. Anyway I am back and my first port of call is Mike’s blog. Told DH to power up the internet etc as a priority before he had a chance to get his jacket off.
Wow! you have certainly made good progress Mike. It’s getting quite exciting to see you sailing ever closer to blighty.

Just wanted to say that, like you, I’m a little disappointed with the donations. Living in a state with 23% unemployment (when including those not counted in the official 15% because they’ve exhausted their benefit or replaced full-time work with part-time) where housing values have more than halved, I understand that many are feeling particularly vulnerable–every person I know has taken a significant pay hit or is being relied upon by someone who has. Am sure that I’m not the only one who’d have given more in normal times and that there are many who wish they could give, which may be evidenced by the number of people clicking on the ads. Please try not to let falling short of your goal leave a sour taste in your mouths. In the end, you did raise money that otherwise would not have been donated, making at least some of the difference you’d hoped to make.

Three consecutive days where the distance to home has (by my calcs) reduced by in excess of 200nm: 21st by 251nm, 22nd by 222nm, 23rd by 208nm. Even the latest one is impressive when you consider Mike is having to head a good 30°off the optimum heading for home.

Hi Mike and Peter and Mom and Sis.
Over on Mike’s blog for “lumpy seas”, Alan provided a link to the Prince of Wales and suggested that we could send notes to ‘invite’ the Royals to Mike’s homecoming. I feel that this is a very worthwhile effort at garnering more attention to Mike’s incredible odyssey and I’ve done so, and here is a repeat of my text (also shown in “Lumpy seas”). I encourage others to do so.

I’m writing from Canada.
As you may be aware, a British lad (17yrs) is about to create a significant page to be added to the illustrious history of British seafaring. Mike Perham has been circumnavigating the world since Nov 2008. His voyage is nearly over, as he is about to arrive in Portsmouth on approx. Aug 29th. This voyage has provided significant challenges to even the most seasoned sailor, yet Mike has displayed incredible courage and tenacity to triumph over these difficulties. He currently holds the world’s record for the youngest solo transatlantic crossing.
Mike’s character and representation of Britain around the world has been well documented on his web site. He has a very dedicated worldwide following online and has garnered the respect of all.
Mike’s stated goal from the beginning was to provide donations to two charities near to his heart…”Save the Children” and the “Tall Ships Youth Trust”. He will also be going to 6 school districts around the UK to talk with school children about his voyage and the importance of believing in a dream. Very worthwhile endeavours.
Mike’s team has had some difficulty reaching his monetary goal, in part due to the economic downturn world wide. More exposure could help rectify this.
I believe that in consideration of what he represents to British maritime heritage and to his countrymen and others such as myself, around the world, that it would be most fitting to have his ‘home welcoming’ represented by a member of the Royal Family, perhaps Prince William or Harry if possible.
This young man deserves significant recognition for his efforts both at sea and on land, and I truly hope the Royal Family will be represented upon his arrival.
