This morning I met the British Ambassador – it was great to meet another Brit. All the pictures of London hanging on their walls brought back a lot of memories, it almost felt like I was home – temporarily at least!
When I got back to my apartment I saw the mail on the kitchen top and a huge grin appeared – there was a letter telling me the new part had arrived. I phoned for a taxi and was down at the boat half an hour later.
Jobs always take longer than you expect and it took us a couple of hours overall to get the stay on and partly tensioned. I couldn’t find any Locktite for the nuts on the boat so I decide to hold off finally tensioning the stay until tomorrow. I’ll also hoist and tension the solent at the same time.
Whilst mentioning the ‘Spot’ emergency tracker in my last blog, I forgot to mention that I do also carry two epirbs on the boat kindly sponsored by McMurdo. The ‘Spot’ tracker, is now my third emergency beacon!
Mechanics have been working throughout the week on my main engine. It’s really got a serious problem in that it jumps around all over the place whenever I engage the propeller. It’s fine in neutral, so is still good for pumping ballast or charging batteries. It’s been like this for ages but hasn’t bothered me at all as I never use my engine in gear anyway. But we’ve decided to get it up and running if we can, so that I could use it in an emergency.
Tomorrow I’m going to pull Totallymoney.com out of the water up in a hoist to have a look underneath to see if there’s something up in that area. This should hopefully be a simple repair and the Yanmar mechanics here in Panama are really fantastic guys – they really know their stuff.
When I look back at my trip so far around the world and sure, it wasn’t non-stop like I always wanted it to be, and unfortunately I haven’t rounded Cape Horn, but one things for sure, It’s been a really incredible adventure so far! I sometimes feel like I’ve had a tad more than my fair share of problems and also being on a really tight budget hasn’t helped speed up the repairs, but I’m a firm believer that things happen for a reason, and that someone up there has a real plan for us all.
Zac Sunderland arrives in Marina Del Rey tomorrow and I really do offer my heartfelt congratulations. Very few people can even begin to realise how much Zac and his family have put into his project. I met up with Zac in Cape Town, South Africa and it was really great to spend some time with him and his father and compare loads of different things about our trips, from financial concerns, to great funny stories from our trips around the world. They were really down to earth people, and always had a smile on their faces.
Both our trips have been very different, I originally wanted to attempt to sail around the world non stop, whereas Zac was always going to stop in many different places and really see the world. Due to equipment failures, I’ve had to stop in Portugal, The Canary Islands, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and now Panama – all places I never envisaged visiting – but these stops have really made the trip even more special (after all Zac and I got to meet in South Africa!).
Our routes have been very different too, I always wanted to see the raw power and fierceness of the Southern Ocean, the most dangerous stretch of sea there is. I also wanted to surf along at break neck speed and really feel the boat come alive hitting average speeds of over 15knots at times and surfing well into the 20’s, whilst being deep into the southern ocean down at times to almost 50degrees south and literally days away from rescue. I’m really pleased that I’ve experienced both of these and I loved it down there!
Zac took a different route, and sailed through the tropics which although has much better weather conditions and is much more of a cruising route, and those who’ve been following his blog will know that this presents a whole different set of challenges…
I set off on this trip knowing that sailing round the world would be really hard, but it was still much, much difficult than I could ever have imagined. So a big thumbs up from me and my family to Zac and his family. They seriously deserve it!
I always knew that some people would try to pit us against each other and it bugs me when that happens. Was it Zac vs Mike? No. I tell you what it is. It’s two teenagers going out there, living their dream and having the adventure of a lifetime!

That’s something that the tiny minority of people, the small minded armchair critics, just can’t understand. They can’t see sailing as an adventure or as fun, all they see is danger and competition. The same sorts of people said the same sorts of things about Chichester.
Anyway, what an adventure – you can go round Cape Horn another time! The fact is you took on the Southern Ocean and came out smiling, and you’ve broken the back of a RTW trip! RESPECT! RESPECT! RESPECT!

I agree with your inner feelings… you have had more than your share of odd problems with totallyoney.com. When I heard about the boat, my first assumption was that this was supplied to you in like new condition, and that being the kind of boat it is it would endure endlessly. For whatever reasons it didn’t exactly accomplich my assumptions, but it has let you meet one of your goals… to surf the most dangerous oceans at high speeds (and sometimes catch wonderful treasures like towlines!).

Well said Mike! Competition is all well and good but non-sailors sometimes forget there are many other reasons for sailing (adventure being one of my favorites). Anytime one meets a fellow sailor it seems there is almost always an instant connection as of friends meeting after an absence. I have said sailors are some of the best people you will ever meet.

I am very happy you feel that way. I have been following you and Zac for over a year now. I think your summary of the situation between your situation and Zac’s is interesting – as I guess you know I have been following your journey for a long time – and I have also been following Zac’s. You both posted objectives in public – Zac to be the youngest sailor to go round the world with stopovers, and you initially to be the youngest to go around non-assisted. Both extremely brave and ambitious objectives. I can empathise a bit though with Poseidon’s post above. You encountered technical difficulties fairly early on in your journey (I remember the Marine Tracker being stuck at the same place early on for many days!), changing the published objective. But that doesn’t detract from what you have (and will) achieve. I take my hat off to both of you – and I think you can still be the youngest person with a stop-over circumnavigation can’t you – if my reckoning is correct?

You really are one of a very few young adventurers that inspire many of us arm chair observers and I salute you for that. If you can get a record for doing it – then fine – but it puts our human existence into perspective when we see people like you take on the challenges you do.

Great post.
I liked what you said about things happening for reasons unknown to us perhaps being part of a larger plan.
When I saw your photograph of the failed hardware at the top of the mast, the first thing I thought was: “Glad he didn’t go for the Horn.”
The pounding you might have encountered there could well have parted the damaged fitting and you would have lost your rig. That could have been a life-threatening event. All the more reason to enjoy your Panama cruise.
I’ve been following both you and Zac from the beginning of both journeys, and have repeatedly urged readers on Zac’s site to check out yours. With his voyage ended, will post one more note on his site suggesting people plug into yours.
Having said that, you’ll soon be wrapping your voyage, too.
Guess us armchair adventurers will have to then plug into the adventures of Jessica the 15-year-old Australian girl who will be sailing a Sparkman & Stephens 34 around the world.
At the end of your journey, I hope you keep a blog going, as suspect you may have many more adventures in the future.

Interesting comments from you today… I was wondering if you would comment about Zac’s completion of circumnavigating the globe today.
I agree with Poseidon above. I’m happy for Zac, he’s done so well with his own resources and the boat is still his tomorrow since he purchased it himself. His route was well planned but I can’t help but hear how you somehow managed to express how your route planned was more difficult and more of a challenge than his. Odd that maybe you didn’t mean it that way, and some called you gentlemanly, but the “one-upmanship” was evident in your words. I do wish you luck going through the canal, and safely home.

Mike, I think you’ve outdone yourself with the congratulatory blog to Zac. I’m a friend of the Sunderlands (and also a friend of Jesse Martin & family). In fact, I wired Zac’s yacht, Intrepid, last year and was in Grenada to do repairs back in May, so I’m also glad he’s back.
What you say is essentially what I’ve said to Zac’s dad several times: the both of you out there showing us how it’s done is good spirit for everyone, and now Jessica W is gearing up, too. It’s a win-win for everyone that there are savvy, determined, teens heading out into the world.
It seems neat that both you and Zac will (assuming you’re not delayed an additional 3 months!!) eventually both be able to share “youngest” honors, and I wish you a safe and speedy return home. May the future be bright!

I don’t think Mike’s intent in discussing his trip concept was to comp;are it to Zac’s in a way that says one is better than the other, and I’m embarrassed and disappointed that some adults would get on here and comment with such inconsiderate words. The 17 year old child has shown to be more adult.
But, if one were to draw the comparison that these people have, its obvious that Mike’s route was the more difficult and had he actually been able to do the route around cape horn as planned, his trip would have been exponentially more difficult.
I also don’t think that matters one iota to Mike and Zac… both have and are doing world-class, remarkable things which we, the audience, should celebrate with more mature sportsmanship.
