We are a small rural school in Northland New Zealand and used an article on Mike’s journey for reading today and we discovered that he’s in Auckland – only 100kms or so from our school – and so we hoped he might be able to answer some questions from the children.
How hard is it to sail by yourself?
It is hard to sail by yourself at times, but as the boat is principly designed for one person that helps hugely.
Do you get much sleep?
I get around 4-6 hours sleep a night. This is grabbed in 5-30min cat naps usually. You can’t sleep for long times as you have to keep a regular watch out for other ships.
Are you lonely and missing ypour family?
The hardest part of sailing solo is that you’re away from your friends and family. You do miss them a lot and you miss the physical contact hugely. Something as small as a simple hug means ever so much when you’re out there on your own.
Do you catch & eat fish?
I don’t catch or eat any fresh fish as all my food is freeze dried and it’s much simpler to just cook and eat that. It also tastes pretty good too!
Have you seen a whale?
I’ve seen many whales during my trip so far and to say they were spectacular would be quite an understatement.
Have you sailed through any storms?
I’ve seen my fair share of some nasty weather during my trip. A good chunk of all my sailing is in the fierce Southern Ocean which is renown for storms and rough weather. However, with my fast sailing yacht we are able to avoid most of the nasty stuff.
Where will you land next?
Hopefully back in the UK! (unless I decided to come back via the Panama Canal)
