I haven’t had an actual budget written down for a long time; about a year or so. That’s not to say I don’t ‘have’ a budget, it’s just all in my head. I know how much I have to spend on each area of my life, and there’s nothing very complicated involved, as all bills and savings go out of my account at the start of the month so I don’t have to worry about them (or forget them).
So I was kind of surprised the other day, when I was doing some banking and looked through my transaction list to see that my actual spending really doesn’t mirror the budget I have in my head, at all.
I was spending a lot more than I thought on some things, and a lot less on others. So this week I am going to pull all my bank statements out and go through and re-write myself a new budget. There are also a few money housekeeping things I have been putting off for a while now, that I should really get out of the way. I also realised when looking through my statements that I have never received a refund I was due.
It’s always a good idea to tweak your budget every now and then; to account for changes in your finances such as increased income, one-off expenses, or rising outgoings. It’s also important to reassess your spending every now and then, so you can see where your money is going. So I guess I better take some of my own advice! Joy of joys.

I just did this recently, as I got a wee raise
and found much cheaper car/home insurance
. Thankfully I have a handy dandy spreadsheet that makes it pretty easy to punch in new numbers and see the results. Sadly, I’m so geeky that this activity is kind of fun for me.
Unfortunately, we have been every month since just starting out. Plus, our salary will be changing in one month, so we have to completely re-do it again for May.
But, like psychsarah, I must be geeky, because I LOVE it!

Since I obsessively track everything, my budget can change as needed. If I notice we’re getting close to a limit, we try to scale back. If we keep bumping up against or exceeding our budget every month, we know it’s time to reassess!
I have a very general budget on a spreadsheet, and I tweak it as needed on a monthly (or semi-monthly, as necessary) basis. So, for instance, my budget for the month was all ready to go, and then I went and got a ticket, so my credit cards don’t get quite as much this month as they normally would. (I do have a miscellaneous fund for this, but in my eagerness to pay off my credit cards, I used the miscellaneous fund toward them before I got the ticket!). So I tweak as necessary, but most months it stays fairly constant.
We do every month! Every dollar on paper, on purpose, before the month begins.
I tweaked my budget every now and then, I’ve been experimenting to really manage my finances well..I still have no luck but hopefully zero-based budgeting will work me…
I definitely need to do this soon because I’ve been working on a blind make-it-up-as-I-go-along budget ever since I moved house back in July! Ooops. Thanks for the reminder FruGal!
