Wedding fever pitch

by FruGal on Apr 29,2011

It’s here! The closest London will ever come to Mardi Gras and Glastonbury rolled into one: THE ROYAL WEDDING! I have to confess that I am VERY excited about today, and will dedicate the entire day to celebrating properly… with a glass of bubbles in one hand and a trifle in the other. I haven’t painted a Union Jack on my face and am not planning to, but stay tuned.

Imagine being Kate Middleton right now… I was nervous enough on the morning of my wedding and I didn’t have three …

The big money mistake most couples make

by FruGal on Apr 25,2011

I am always surprised by one thing when reading personal finance blogs. Here are all these people who have a lot of sensible things to say about finance, and a lot of them seem to be making the same mistakes when it comes to money and relationships: completely combining finances with their partner either upon moving in together or getting married.

Why? Why do people do this? Look at pretty much any survey taken since, I don’t know, Roman times? And the same thing comes up over and over again as …

Would you buy a second hand wedding dress?

by FruGal on Apr 22,2011

Ok, so you will have to indulge us for a few more days, because the entire country is absolutely ENGULFED in Royal Wedding Fever. Everywhere you look right now the image of Wills’n’Kate’s grinning faces is etched into every possible surface – yesterday while taking a walk I noticed that one of my neighbours is clearly quite insane: beaming from the comfort of their front bay window is a life-size replica of the happy couple, arm in arm and clearly enjoying the prospect of a quiet West London street. Madness.

Top of the tat: The best of the worst royal wedding memorabilia

by Harri Pierce on Apr 21,2011

Today Transport for London revealed the latest in the shocking royal wedding tat infiltrating the homes of the great British public. Described by Boris Johnson as a, ‘Fabulous memento’, the commemorative oyster card looks like a 10 year olds’ budget attempt at subterfuge on Microsoft Paint.

Quite frankly enough is enough. Wedding fatigue has well and truly struck. Now the prospect of the two consecutive long weekends seems a small price to pay for the ubiquity of tacky tea towels. In protest, today we’ve scoured the web for the top of the tat; the best of the worst royal wedding …

Dad’s frugal finds: Tips from the tip

by Harri Pierce on Apr 20,2011

On moving into my new house, Dad presented me with a beautiful antique wooden towel rack. Feeling pretty ashamed that the bank of Mum and Dad had forked out for me once again I asked him how much it had cost. £5. From the local tip.

You probably have some pretty interesting preconceptions of my Dad now and I don’t blame you. The thought of picking up finds at the local refuse centre conjures up images of Stig of the Dump, the dishevelled, grunting Neanderthal who …
