Parents who treat their children to a family holiday during this Easter Break will be subject to hugely inflated holiday premiums, research by Santander Cards has revealed.
The research, which looked at the cost of a holiday for four to various destinations, found that families face a premium of 119% on average for jetting away during the week commencing 28th March.
Looking at holidays to Florida, Crete, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and the Algarve, the research found Gran Canaria to be the worst, with a 214% cent premium for travelling during this school break.
The research follows from Government findings that show family holidays are the second most common reason for school absence.
Those looking for a cheaper alternative may wish to travel to the Algarve, Portugal, which cost on average just 37% more compared to when the kids are back at school.
Travelling to Gran Canaria from Manchester during this period will cost £8,894 for flights and accommodation, compared to £2,832 a few weeks later. Families who fly from London Gatwick to Orlando, Florida, will find themselves paying £8,886 compared to £3,123 if travelling during the term time.
The research also found that Easter package holiday prices carry a slightly higher premium for families flying from London Gatwick rather than Manchester, at an average of 128% compared to 112%.
Emma Roberts, Director of Santander Cards, commented: “Given the price hikes it’s not surprising that many parents choose to take their family holiday during school time.
“Holidaymakers should make sure they only spend on a credit card abroad that offers them fee-free foreign usage.”
