Beware of fire risk on Christmas day

House FireMORE TH>N Home insurance has reminded homeowners to take extra care with candles and cooking on Christmas Day, as the amount of homes damaged by fire is set to rise by 180%, according to analysis of the firm’s claims data.

Last Christmas Day, MORE TH>N reports that it saw a sharp increase in the number of fire incidents filed, with most originating from the oven or candles catching light to surrounding materials. As such, the insurer says safety should be at the top of everyone’s Christmas wish list.

Head of MORE TH>N Home insurance, Annette Lepper, said:

“Christmas Day is a time for enjoyment, friends and family. We would encourage homeowners to take a few simple precautions to make sure that you don’t let a fire ruin your celebration.”

MORE TH>N also has some helpful advice to help keep your Christmas fire-free:

- Carefully monitor what you have cooking in the oven, remember to turn it off when the food has been taken out
- Candles should never be left in an unattended room, keep them away from curtains and other materials.
- Have burning candles in a sturdy holder on a fire resistant surface
- Keep tinsel and decorations away from sources of heat
- Don’t overload sockets
- Turn off tree lights when you go out and when you go to bed
- Remember to turn off outside lights overnight
