Barclays have confirmed that a ‘hardware problem’ that hit online accounts and ATMs yesterday has now been fixed.
Yesterday, Barclays’ technical teams were racing to correct a problem that meant that customers couldn’t log into their online bank accounts while customers in the south were also unable to use cash machines. Anyone calling by phone also found that their transfer requests could not be carried out.
The bank did not confirm how many customers were affected, but it is known to have 15.2 million customers in total across 1,700 branches.
Customers attempting to access funds online were greeted with the message: “We’re currently experiencing technical problems in online banking that means some of you may not be able to log in to the service.” Later that day, as the problem was addressed, the message changed to: “Technical problems this afternoon meant that you may not have been able to log-in to online Banking. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
Earlier this month, a technical problem with Nationwide’s website caused customers of the building society to be unable to access their online accounts for almost 15 hours. The website received an upgrade at 3am which made the site only intermittently available in the first few hours of the day, before becoming completely inaccessible for the rest of the day.
