British Gas prices cut by 10% for February

British Gas has become the first major UK energy supplier to cut their prices in response to the falling wholesale price of oil.

The move follows pressure on suppliers by industry regulator, Ofgem, to lower prices as the price of oil has plummeted over the past months.

British Gas announced that their standard tariff gas prices by 10% from 19th February 2009.  This will bring the average British Gas customer’s gas bill to £793.  Customers on fixed-rate plans will not benefit from the changes.

The supplier has also introduced a range of ‘prompt payment’ discounts for its customers who pay by quarterly cash or cheque, quarterly equal payments, and quarterly variable direct deposit.

It was predicted that major suppliers would begin cutting their 2009 prices in early January.  Supplier Scottish Power got the ball rolling, cutting the cost of its Price Sure fixed energy plan by ten per cent, benefiting its new and existing customers with a saving of £81 on their average bill – from £1,210 down to £1,129.

Customers wanting to take advantage of price cuts should use an independent energy price comparison tool to find the cheapest tariffs in their area.

    Dear Sirs

    RE FAILURE BRITISH GAS TO RETURN STOLEN MONEY

    I write out of sheer & utter frustration regards the constant fobbing off and excuses my partner & I have endured from British Gas. We have wasted valuable time and effort trying to retrieve monies that British Gas illegally debited from my bank account. On 03/02/10, I authorised British Gas to remove £87 (IN TOTAL) as payment for two utility bills which totalled the above figure. However, I was horrified to discover British Gas had in fact removed £878 instead of the intended £87.

    Following numerous & exhaustive phone calls to British Gas to enquire about the illegally removed monies, I have only managed to retrieve £273 and was GUARANTEED the balance would follow. As a result of this huge blunder, I have incurred 2 bank charges of £25 each which I feel British Gas are wholly responsible for. We are absolutely infuriated, mentally exhausted & distressed with this on-going situation and refuse to contact British Gas again as they have failed to: (A) honour the debt owed (B) demonstrate consistency in regards to their reasons for the blunder occurring and (C) justify their reasons for failing to notify me of their mistake.

    To add insult to injury, they offered us a £50 reduction toward future bills (DUEL FUEL); as a good will gesture only to then send a letter advising that the gesture was infact £30 (which they later amended after my persistence). Due to their absolute dishonesty and flagrant disregard for causing us great annoyance & inconvenience, we completely distrust British Gas with our bank details and opted for payment cards instead). This will be a safer option to avoid British Gas from stealing & retaining further funds that do not belong to them! To make matters worst, British Gas had the cheek to request a total payment of £10 for the cards despite the fact it was THEM who made this mistake in the first place. WHAT AN INSULT! We now realize they have sent two payment cards for GAS ACCOUNT only. I am completely at my wits end and would like this case looked into further by you.

    I ask that you investigate this matter and get British Gas to do the following;

    • Repay all bank charges which incidentally occurred as a result of British Gas incompetence & lies and moreover, their failure to reimburse my money. Since this blunder occurred, I have been forced to borrow money to buy groceries, fund travel to and from work and to re arrange standing orders in order to prevent my account from going FURTHER over my overdraft limit (thanks to British Gas).
    • I demand a letter of apology from British Gas
    • An explanation as to why they failed to contact me when they realised they had illegally debited nearly £900 form my bank account

    I look forward to your speedy reply

    Yours sincerely

    An extremely irate customer
