Why is it that calling your bank is such a hassle? It shouldn’t be, but we’ve started relying on internet banking so much, we never bother calling them anymore. Once you get past the horrible robot lady, the people at my bank are actually lovely. They’re helpful. They’re sometimes quicker than me trying to organise things online. Here’s when you should call your bank and have a bit of a chat:
When something doesn’t look right
We put a lot of trust in computers these days. Enough to actually trust that our bank details are safe and that computers will take care of everything. But sometimes they don’t. And instead of looking and thinking ‘that figure isn’t right’, we need to call our banks and sort it out. Instead, we cross our fingers and assume things will get sorted out.
When we’ve got lots of comings and going
I don’t think it’s a bad thing to have a lot of bank accounts – actually, I’ve suggested before that a sensible account for bills is a good idea. But when you have got lots of accounts and lots of different amounts coming in and different Direct Debits, it’s worth talking to them to see if there’s an easier way for you to manage things. They might suggest moving your payments to mid-month, or merging two accounts into one. Banks are good at managing money. That’s what they’re there for.
When you need to borrow
There’s a button on my account that I can click should I want to increase my overdraft or apply for a loan. Yet I hate the idea of borrowing money without actually talking to anyone. It doesn’t feel right. Just like I don’t really feel like I’m spending my money if I buy online, I imagine I’d feel the same if I applied online. Again, it’s all about the discussion – talking to someone who’s trained about your finances can help. Even if you just want to know your best options. You can’t do that if you just click a button on your laptop.
We rely so much on computers that we’ve forgotten that speaking to someone can be what we need to do. We shy away from picking up the phone, but when it comes to our finances that’s exactly what we should do sometimes.
